Title: Partial Inductance – The Secret to Correlating Simulation and Measurement

Date: August 25, 2021

Time: 11:30am PT / 2:30pm ET

Presented by: Benjamin Dannan, Staff Digital Engineer, Northrop Grumman and Steve Sandler, Managing Director, Picotest

Abstract:
There's confusion about the measurement of capacitors, and particularly the series inductance or ESL. Different manufacturers calibrate or de-embed their measurement differently, making it difficult to compare one vendor to another. The differences between these measurements represent different locations of the measurement reference plane.

When correlating EM simulation and measurement results, where should the reference plane be for the capacitor measurement? Why does the target impedance measurement show much higher inductance than the simulator? Why do some experts recommend measuring impedance from both sides of the PCB and not just one side? In this session, Steve Sandler, Heidi Barnes and I will provide analysis that answers all of these questions and more!

Presenter Bios:

Benjamin Dannan is a Staff Digital Engineer at Northrop Grumman, with a multi-faceted background that includes a wide range of professional engineering and military experiences. He is a senior member of IEEE, with professional engineering experience that includes over 12 years of designing, developing, and launching production products, ranging from fully autonomous robotic platforms, to pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera video systems, to ground combat vehicles. His design experience includes developing solutions for high-volume, high-reliability, harsh environments, which also entails designs for solutions that meet EMC susceptibility and radiated EMI requirements. He is a specialist in signal and power integrity concepts, as well as has multiple years of experience with EMC product development and certifications to support global product launches. Benjamin holds a certification in cybersecurity, has a BSEE from Purdue University, a Masters of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University, and graduated from the USAF Undergraduate Combat Systems Officer training school with an aeronautical rating. Benjamin is a trained Electronic Warfare Officer in the USAF with deployments on the EC-130J Commando Solo in Afghanistan and Iraq totaling 47 combat missions, as well as a trained USAF Cyber Operations Officer. He has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed journal publications. In addition, he received the prestigious DesignCon 2020 best paper award, given to authors leading as practitioners in semiconductor and electronic design.

Steve Sandler has been involved with power system engineering for more than 40 years. Steve is the founder and CEO of PICOTEST.com, a company specializing in instruments and accessories for high performance power system and distributed system testing. Steve is also the founder of AEi Systems, a company specialized in worst case circuit analysis for high reliability industries.

He frequently lectures and leads workshops internationally on the topics of Power Integrity and Distributed Power System Design. He is a Keysight Certified EDA expert. Steve is also a recent Winner of the Jim Williams ACE Award for Contributor of the Year (2015) and a 2-time Test & Measurement Test Engineer of the Year Finalist. He was the recipient of both the DesignCon 2017 and EDICON 2017 Best Paper Awards.
